Global NEWS 2: Past and Future TrendsThe Global NEWS workgroup recently carried out an effort to enhance the river nutrient export model and apply it in an integrated approach to connect socioeconomic factors and nutrient management to river export of nitrogen, phosphorus, silica and carbon. We analzed past trends (1970ñ2000) and four future scenarios (2030 and 2050) based on the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment scenarios. This work is being published in a special section of Global Biogeochemical Cycles (GBC) that includes 12 articles. Here we list 5 articles from that special section, describing the overall effort and main conclusions (Seitzinger et al., 2010), enhanced nutrient and hydrological input datasets and models (Bouwman et al., 2009; Van Drecht et al., 2009; Fekete et al., in press); and a new dissolved Si model (Beusen et al., 2009) and the updates to Global NEWS ("NEWS 2", Mayorga et al., 2010, published elsewhere). Seitzinger et al. and Mayorga et al. are available here for download.
Initial Presentation of Global NEWSThe first set of articles produced by the Global NEWS workgroup was published in late 2005 and early 2006 as a special section of Global Biogeochemical Cycles (GBC) featuring the Global NEWS models and related work; the complete list of 11 articles and their abstracts are available at the GBC special section web page. Five articles in this collection present the Global NEWS goals and the first version of the nutrient export models; these articles may be downloaded as pdfs below.
